The Asia Cup is an International Men’s Cricket Tournament. Founded in 1983, The Asia Cup has managed to make a place in the heart of cricket lovers. The Asia Cup 2021 is expected to be held in June 2021. Authorities are planning to schedule a total of 13 matches in the T20 Format. The matches will be between Group A and Group B. It will be followed by Super 4 stage matches. 

Based on the points, the top two teams will be decided. These two teams will play the final Match. The winner will take home the prestigious trophy of ACC Asia Cup 2021.

EXPECTED START DATE

At first, the 15th edition of the ACC Asia Cup was being planned to be held in September 2020. In July 2020, the authorities postponed the tournament due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

According to some online news portals, the ACC Asia Cup Tournament is most likely to begin on Tuesday, June 1 2021. Final confirmation on the same is still awaited.

Earlier, ACC declared on July 9 2020, that all the matches would be held in the June 2021 window. ACC declared that “Conducting the event in a responsible manner remains the priority of the ACC and the Board is hopeful that the tournament will be held in 2021. The ACC is currently working towards securing June 2021 as a suitable window for the same.”

Most likely the tournament is going to take place in the expected June 2021 window. Once the official authorities plan to disclose the dates, we will get the information.

THE VENUE OF ASIA CUP 2021

The Asia Cup 2021 is likely to be held in the host country Sri Lanka. An official press release statement on July 9 2020, confirmed the new host of the Asia Cup 2021 last year itself.

An excerpt from the statement declares the host, “It may also be noted that the hosts for the Asia Cup 2020, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), has exchanged hosting rights for the tournament with Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC).”

Thus, the tournament is to be organized by the host country. Hence, the matches are most likely to be held in Sri Lanka itself.

EXPECTED ASIA CUP SCHEDULE 2021

ACC Asia Cup 2021 is most likely to consist of 12 ODI and 1 Final match. The matches are scheduled to be played as Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is) in this upcoming edition.

The ACC Asia Cup 2021 schedule will most likely comprise two rounds- Group and Super 4.

1)First Round

This round will comprise all the matches between Group A and B. The two groups are yet to be made by the council. This is assumed according to the format of the last Asia Cup edition.

2)Super 4 Round

The top four final teams will play against each other in this round. This is an important round which will grab many eyeballs. We will get the top two teams because of this round itself. Then, the finale will be held between the top two teams.

To ensure a fair play, each team will play against the other team at least once in the Group and Super 4 stages.

EXPECTED ASIA CUP 2021 TEAMS

It is expected that a total of six teams will play in the ACC Asia cup 2021. The expected teams are as follows:

  1. Afghanistan: The country has failed to enter even the final matches leave alone being the winner. But we never know how the tables turn!
  2. Bangladesh: The country has never been able to get the winner tag for even a single time. The Bangladesh cricket team has made its place in the semi finale thrice. The team is constantly improving its performance in the Asia Cup tournament.
  3. India: India currently holds the title of the most successful team in the ACC Asia Cup tournament. The Indian cricket team has seven titles to its name including six ODIs and one T20. India has participated in 13 cups which is the second most for any country.
  4. Pakistan: Pakistan who has played 13 cups have just a single cup to its name.
  5. Sri Lanka: The Sri Lankan cricket team has won the second-most (five) titles. The country has also played the highest number of Asia Cup (14).
  6. TBC (2020 Asia Cup Qualifier): The final team is yet to be decided through the Asia Cup Qualifier. This started back in 2020 but was halted due to the situation of pandemic.

 

ASIA CUP QUALIFIER

To find the sixth team of the Asia Cup Tournament, the Asia Cup Qualifier was played. Earlier this edition of the Asia Cup was to be held in 2020, so the qualifying matches were initiated in February and March 2020 by the Asian Cricket Council (ACC). 

There were 13 teams -eight in the Western event and five in the Eastern event. The Asia Cup Qualifier tournament was planned to be held in Malaysia in August 2020. When the Asia Cup was postponed, it led to the postponement of the Asia Cup qualifier too.

ASIA CUP QUALIFIER SCHEDULE

There were two regions – Eastern and Western in the qualifying rounds. Let us know about the schedule of both in brief.

1)Western Region

The teams were divided into two groups A and B. Let us look at the playing schedule of both.

Schedule for Group A

  1. 23 February 2020

The match was scheduled at 09:30 between Qatar and Maldives. Qatar won by 106 runs.

The next match was at 13:30 between Bahrain and Oman. Oman won by 8 wickets.

  1. 24 February 2020

The first match of the Day was held at 09:30 between Qatar and Oman; Qatar won by 34 runs.

The next match was at 13:30 between Bahrain and Maldives. Bahrain won by 65 runs.

  1. 25 February 2020

The first match of the Day was held at 09:30 between Maldives and Oman; Oman won by 10 wickets.

  1. 25 February 2020

The next match was at 13:30. Among the two opponents Qatar and Bahrain, Bahrain won by 6 wickets.

Schedule for Group B

  1. 23 February 2020

The first match took place at 09:30 between Iran and the United Arab Emirates. The United Arab Emirates won by 10 wickets.

The second match of the day was at 13:30 between Saudi Arabia and Kuwait; Kuwait won by 9 wickets.

The first match took place at 09:30 between Iran and Saudi Arabia with the latter winning by 9 wickets.

The second match of the day was at 13:30 between the United Arab Emirates and Kuwait and the former won by 47 runs.

  1. 25 February 2020

The first cricket qualifier match took place at 09:30 between the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia. The United Arab Emirates won by 12 runs.

The next match of the day was at 13:30. The two opponents were Iran and Kuwait; Kuwait won by 8 wickets.

Play-offs

Semi-final 1: 26 February 2020 at 09:30

The match was held between Kuwait and Bahrain and the former won by 87 runs.

Semi-final 2: 26 February 2020 at 09:30

The match was held between the United Arab Emirates and Qatar. The United Arab Emirates won by 28 runs.

Final: 27 February 2020 at 09:30

The final match was played between the United Arab Emirates and Kuwait; the United Arab Emirates won by 102 runs.

2)Eastern Region 

Qualifier Round Schedule for the eastern region is as follows:

The first match of the day took place at 09:30 between Singapore and Thailand. Singapore won by 43 runs.

The second match of the day took place at 13:30 between Malaysia and Nepal with the former winning by 22 runs.

  1. 1 March 2020

The first match of the day took place at 09:30 between Hong Kong and Nepal. Hong Kong won by 43 runs.

The second match of the day took place at 13:30 between Thailand and Malaysia and the latter won by 8 wickets.

  1. 3 March 2020

The first match of the day took place at 09:30 between Singapore and Malaysia. Singapore won by 128 runs.

Next match was at 13:30. The playing teams were Thailand and Hong Kong. Hong Kong won by 8 wickets.

  1. 4 March 2020

A match was held at 09:30 between Thailand and Nepal and the latter won by 9 wickets.

  1. 4 March 2020

Next match was conducted at 13:30. Singapore and Hong Kong were competitors. Singapore won by 16 runs.

  1. 6 March 2020

Again, the first match was at 09:30. Two opponents were Nepal and Singapore. This play was not possible due to rain.

The next match was at 13:30 between Malaysia and Hong Kong. Hong Kong won by 6 wickets.

FINAL ASIA CUP QUALIFIER

This Qualifier round was scheduled to take place in Kuala Lumpur in August last year. This got pushed further due to Covid-19 Pandemic. The top two teams from the Western region are Kuwait and the UAE and from the eastern region, we have Singapore and Hong Kong. 

The schedule for the last qualifying round is yet to be announced by ACC. We have already seen the schedule for the played qualifying rounds for both zones. Now, we must wait for the official announcement of the schedule by ACC.
